Again this is linked to overall health, but
basically the message is that your skin will say a lot about
your general state of health. Best advice is to make sure you
look clean and well groomed. Try to spend some time outdoors to
promote that so called "healthy glow". There is no doubt a
little bit of colour helps. I have known some men to use
make-up, but this is rare and I advise against it! Of course,
for the ladies, who are used to putting on make up.......
If you have problems with your complexion, and
you know you have interviews looming, the message has to be -
do something about it. There are many excellent products on
the market that help promote a healthy looking complexion. So,
if you need to use one, and you're not sure, seek advice from
your doctor.
Before I close this section, a quick mention of a
situation that arises more often than you might think. Simply
it is this. You have dressed up for your interview and you look
a million dollars. However, on the way to the interview,
something untoward happens. You get splashed by a lorry, snag
the jacket, someone spills something down you. What should you
do? It's too late to turn back and change!
In certain circumstances this situation can be
covered. For the ladies, a spare pair of tights in case of a
ladder, for the gents, a spare tie in the brief case. But for
something more major? Well, my experience tells me the thing to
do is this. Providing you haven't had the suit ripped off your
back, and you can carry on, do so. Point out to the interviewer
what has happened, then get on with the interview and forget
about it. Difficult I know, but if you let it worry you during
the interview, it will hold you back. You cannot afford to be
conscious of the "whatever" if you decide to carry on. If you
have explained yourself properly, most interviewers will take it
as a sign of great personal strength that you can conduct a good
interview in these circumstances. "I see Fred wasn't put off by
that incident he experienced on the way here, that shows good
mental attitude". etc.
If the accident really is too severe, again you
have the option to cancel or possibly find the shops and
replace, if you have time. In any case, if you are thinking of
cancelling, you will have to speak to the potential employer,
and bear in mind it is the eleventh hour. You could ask what
they want you to do, you may be surprised at the answer!
So, to close this chapter, remember, if you can
see it, you can be it. Like I said tacky, but it does get the
point home. So when preparing for an interview, look your best
and you will feel your best. It may be just the extra percent
or two that you need to beat the competition.
