How To Get The Job You Really Really Want - Where To Find Jobs - Specialist Market Media

By specialist market media, I am referring to the dear old "trade mag".  Yes, every industry has one, and yes, everyone in the industry gets one, and yes, everyone pretends to read them!  In reality, the only time they do get read is by recruitment agencies looking for leads, and by people looking for jobs.  Maybe a little cynical, but, answer honestly, how often do you read the trade press?  I know you take it home at weekends with good intentions, but really, how often do you actually give it a really good read?  Not that often, I bet!

Having said all of the above, and been a total cynic, these professional journals are normally a high calibre source of top jobs.  The jobs in the trade journals, are, of course, highly targeted, but nonetheless, the jobs they offer are excellent.  If you are in a job search situation, this is certainly one of the first places to look.

Now, when I started putting this website together, it was my intention to list as many as possible of the trade magazines.  So, I trotted off to the local library to find a copy of Basic Rate and Data Business (BRAD Business for short).  I have to admit that I was somewhat taken aback by what I found.  Do you know how many trade journals are published in the U.K?  I thought probably about a thousand, maybe fifteen hundred at a push.  Uh uh!  Wrong. The answer?

                                                6,589

Amazing isn't it?  So what I suggest is that, in the unlikely situation that you don't know what publications serve your market, you also go to your local library, get the reference copy of BRAD Business and have a look for yourself.  The trade journal section is split by business area, say, Accountancy, IT, Retail, Oil and so on.  Look up your particular industry and there, listed for your ease of use, are all the relevant trade mags, including the publisher.  What could be easier?

Most of the trade publications are published by either Reed or VNU anyway, so you could always contact them to see if they have a publication in your market.
