Many people ask me, "Is it worth getting
professional help in putting my CV together?" The answer is
a resounding NO. People who do this charge an awful lot of
money, and they normally have a standard format that an
experienced recruiter can spot a mile off. It's not just the
money, these people cannot do anything for you that you cannot
do yourself.
It's unusual, but some hirers will automatically
bin these production line CV's. Like I said, it's not just the
money or the look of the CV. There is a much more important
reason for writing your own CV. Think back to Chapter Two.
All that looking at yourself, and deciding what you want? What
you're good at? Well, putting your own CV together is the
final part of the process. You see, you have to sit down and
think about what you can offer a potential employer
(remember Bankers!).
So, this final act of putting the CV together,
prepares you for how you are going to portray yourself to
potential employers. You know in detail what you have included
in your CV, and you become a natural extension of the CV.
If someone else has written your resume, you will
not be able to benefit from this close association. You will
run into situations at interview that you are unable to deal
with, because the interviewer has picked on a point that you are
not fully aware of! Why? Because you didn't fully
understand what was written about you, by someone else!
Embarrassing, eh? In short, if you write your own CV, you will
be able to sell yourself better from it.
By all means use all professional help available
to format and physically produce the CV, but YOU MUST
write the content.
