How To Get The Job You Really
Really Want - Applying For Jobs - Target A Specific Company
If you have
decided on this approach, hopefully you will have completed your
research as indicated in previously and have a list of companies you
particularly want to work for.
If you have also decided on your goals and career
direction as per that section, it should not be too difficult to put
together a letter which highlights skills that will be relevant to
most of the targeted companies. You will probably be fairly sure
that the company concerned employ people of your level and skills,
as well as having an idea of the personal skills required. Again
highlight relevant skills and attributes, and be prepared to amend
the letter slightly to cover any specific circumstances.
This approach needs to be slightly broader, as you
may not have any / many specifics to work with. So a broader brush
approach will be more likely to result in an interview. However,
the same rules apply. If your letter or email is four pages long
and full of irrelevant crap, it will end up in the bin or deleted.
Keep it short, light and succinct. If you do cover a broad range of
skills, you are may be considered for more than one post.
Again, if
possible, find out who the person doing the hiring is. The personal
approach is likely to reap benefits once again.
Here's a
couple of sample approaches...
Dear Mr Bloggs,
I have, for sometime, been
aware of your company's growing presence in the whatever market. As
you can see from the enclosed CV, I have a variety of skills which I
believe could add significant value to your organisation.
Insert skills and abilities as described
in the previous section.
Dear Mr Bloggs,
I read with interest, your
recent article on Joe Bloggs plc in last weeks trade press. I
noted, particularly your comments regarding the difficulty you have
in attracting quality staff in the current market where there is a
significant shortage of skills. I have, therefore enclosed a copy
of my current CV for your consideration. I believe I have a variety
of skills that can add significant value to your organisation.
Again, add relevant skills and abilities
as described above.
Yours sincerely
Derek Armson
